And ask myself if it's real
Sometimes I look at the sky and ask myself if its real- a textile work about embracing the loss of forgotten memories and searching for an identity without them. Being in search of a lost child.
This work is based on photos taken during my childhood. The photos I have chosen do not evoke specific memories but rather emotions and a sense of recognition. Some evoke a sense of loneliness, others an attraction to water and nature, curiosity, envy, bewilderment, playfulness or loss.
I explore how memories shape me as an individual. Because my memories are scarce, it feels like I am missing a part of my identity. It’s about searching for that lost part, about letting go and forgiving. Capturing these memories in a different medium not only confirms their existence but also my own.
This work was created for the group exhibition ‘Care,’ organized by Hujo and Dwaalzin, Ghent, October 2023.
